An eSIM for your tablet, laptop or router

Every eSIM guide on the internet assumes the device in your hand is a phone. Plenty of them are not. A data-only profile suits a tablet or a laptop better than it suits a phone — there is no number to lose and no account to link — but only some hardware can take one, and the install works differently when there is no camera to scan with.

The short answer

Whether a device can take a travel eSIM was decided in a factory, usually years ago, and no amount of software will change it. Here is the whole landscape in one table.

The pattern behind that table: if the device has its own cellular modem, a data-only profile works and works well. If it does not, nothing sold anywhere will give it one — and the honest answer is your phone’s hotspot, which is free and already in your pocket.

The rest of this guide is the detail that decides which row you are in, the install path for devices with no camera, and the two places where people waste a purchase finding out the hard way.

The three things that decide it

Compatibility gets discussed as one question when it is really three, and a device has to pass all three. Most of the confusion online comes from people answering a different one than the one being asked.

A modem

Cellular radio hardware, fitted at the factory. The Wi-Fi and the cellular version of the same tablet are different products with different internals, and the cheaper one can never become the other.

An eUICC

The rewritable chip a profile is written onto. Cellular hardware from roughly 2018 onward has one; a little older kit has a modem but only a physical SIM tray, which is a no for eSIM and a yes for an adapter card.

A way in

A screen and a menu for adding a profile — ideally with a manual-entry field, because a camera cannot be assumed. iPadOS, Android, Windows 11 and ChromeOS all have one. Some routers genuinely do not.

The fastest test on any device takes ten seconds and needs no research: look for a “Cellular” or “Mobile data” entry in the settings. If the menu is not there, the modem is not there either. That single check settles it for tablets and laptops alike, and it is more reliable than any compatibility list — including ours.

Tablets: the case that just works

A cellular tablet is the best possible home for a no-KYC profile. It has a big screen, a rear camera to scan with, and no phone line of its own to complicate anything — which is exactly the shape of a data-only product.

The mistake that costs people a purchase: “Wi-Fi only” is a hardware decision, not a setting. An iPad, a Galaxy Tab or a Fire tablet bought in its Wi-Fi trim has no modem inside it at all. There is no update, no accessory and no eSIM that changes that — check the box, the invoice, or simply the settings menu before you buy any data.

  • iPad: the Pro from 2018, the Air from its third generation, the mini from its fifth and the standard iPad from its seventh — cellular trims only. Since 2024 the cellular Pro and Air have dropped the SIM tray entirely and are eSIM-only, which makes them the easiest devices on this page.
  • Samsung: recent Galaxy Tab S models in their 5G trim. As with phones, the Wi-Fi variant of the identical-looking tablet is a different product.
  • Watch out for the popular exceptions. Google’s Pixel Tablet has no cellular version at all, and neither do most budget Android tablets. Their spec sheets say Wi-Fi and mean it.

    Point the tablet’s camera at the QR shown on your phone or another screen. If the tablet refuses, take the “Enter Details Manually” path instead.

    Call it “Travel data”. On a device that will hold one profile for years, a clear label saves a puzzled minute later.

    On that line specifically. Travel profiles roam by design, and a tablet will sit there showing full signal and moving nothing at all until roaming is enabled.

One thing surprises people on first install and is completely normal: the plan shows no phone number. There is nothing to display, because a data profile never had one. Nothing on a tablet needs it — maps, browsers, mail and messaging apps all work over data alone, and your real number stays where it is, on your phone.

Laptops: the mobile-broadband lottery

The laptop answer is blunter than manufacturers like to advertise: the large majority of laptops sold have no modem whatsoever. Mobile broadband is a configure-to-order extra that most buyers never tick, and it cannot be added afterwards on most machines.

  • Check before you buy data, not after. On Windows, open Settings → Network & internet: if there is a “Cellular” entry, you have a modem, and if there is not, you do not. On ChromeOS the equivalent is a “Mobile data” row under Network.
  • The model name is not enough. Two ThinkPads with the same name and year differ on this depending on how they were configured. The settings menu is the only answer that is actually about your machine.
  • A MacBook is a definite no, and it is worth saying plainly because the question comes up constantly. The fix is the hotspot on the iPhone next to it, which shares the same travel profile at no extra cost.

When the hardware is there, a laptop is a genuinely good use of a travel plan — a working machine that is online in an airport without touching the terminal’s network, which is the one place public Wi-Fi still reliably costs you something.

Installing on a device with no camera

This is the section that does not exist in phone guides, and it is the one that decides whether your afternoon goes well. An eSIM is normally installed by scanning a QR code — which is elegant on a phone and useless on a laptop, where there is no rear camera and the device you would need to photograph is the one you are holding.

The QR is only a container. Inside it are two pieces of text: an SM-DP+ address, which is the server holding your profile, and an activation code that identifies it. Every eSIM-capable operating system will accept those two strings typed in by hand, and both are shown next to the QR on your order page for exactly this reason.

    Do this on a device that is already online. The dashboard shows the QR and, beside it, the same two values as text you can copy.

    Windows 11: Settings → Network & internet → Cellular → eSIM profiles → Add profile, then choose to enter an activation code instead of searching for one. Android and iPadOS: “Enter details manually”, under the QR scanner. ChromeOS: Settings → Network → Add mobile network.

    Type or paste the two values

    The activation code is long and case-sensitive. Paste it if the device allows pasting — a single wrong character comes back as a vague server error rather than as a typo, and people lose an hour to that.

    The same rule as on a phone, and the same symptom when it is missed: a connected modem, a carrier name on screen, and not one byte moving.

The trap that catches careful people: installing a profile requires a working internet connection, because the device downloads it from the SM-DP+ server. A laptop whose only route online was going to be this eSIM cannot fetch its own profile. Install at home on Wi-Fi, days early — validity starts at first connection abroad, not at install, so being early costs nothing at all.

A profile can be installed once. If a half-finished attempt on a stubborn laptop burns it, that is not a lost purchase — open an anonymous ticket and ask for a reissue. It is free and quick, and it beats an afternoon of workarounds.

Travel routers, and the adapter-card route

A travel router earns its place when several devices need to be online all day, or when a laptop with no modem still has to work somewhere with no trustworthy Wi-Fi. The eSIM situation there is in transition and worth understanding before you spend anything.

  • Most travel routers still expect a physical SIM. The well-known pocket models have a tray, not an eUICC, and a QR code is of no use to them.
  • A growing handful ship with eSIM alongside the tray. These are the ones to look for, and the spec sheet says so explicitly — if it does not say eSIM, assume a tray.
  • Adapter cards exist and genuinely work. A programmable SIM card that you write a profile onto with a phone app turns any tray into an eSIM slot. It is the only route for hardware that will never support eSIM natively.
  • They are also the fiddliest option here. Provisioning usually needs an Android phone, not every profile writes successfully, and a failed write can consume a single-use QR. Treat a first attempt as an experiment you do at home, not the night before a flight.

Whatever the router runs on, the useful bit is the same: everyone on the trip shares one plan instead of buying five. Renting a pocket Wi-Fi or using your own phone covers when the box is worth carrying at all — for two or three people, the phone in your pocket usually wins on both price and weight.

Where it stops, and why

Some devices have a modem, have an eUICC, and will still refuse your profile. That is not a fault and not a restriction on our side — it is how those products are built, and knowing it in advance saves an order.

  • Smartwatches are a firm no. A cellular Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch does not want a data plan; it wants a plan from your own carrier that mirrors the phone number on your phone. A data-only profile has no number to mirror, so there is nothing for the watch to accept. No third-party eSIM works here, from anyone.
  • Cars are the manufacturer’s. The modem in a modern car is soldered to a contract you did not sign and cannot be repointed at another provider.
  • E-readers and connected cameras are the same story. Where they include mobile data at all, it is an embedded deal with one operator and no user-facing way in.
  • Handheld consoles and most gaming handhelds have no modem, whatever the forums claim. They tether like anything else, and that is the intended path.

The dividing line is worth naming, because it explains every row above: a no-KYC eSIM sells data, not a phone line. Anything that fundamentally needs a number — a mirrored watch plan, an SMS code, a voice call — is asking for something a data-only product does not have, and that is deliberate rather than a shortcoming: numbers are what make anonymous telecom illegal in most of the world.

Install a profile, or just tether?

Assume the device passes the hardware test. There is still a real choice, and buying a second plan is not automatically the better half of it — your phone can already share the plan it has.

The honest default for most travellers is tethering, and it is worth saying even though we sell the alternative: one plan, shared from the phone, covers a laptop for a week away without a second purchase. The argument for installing directly is not cost — it is independence. A tablet with its own profile is online when your phone is dead, stolen, or deliberately switched off, and that is worth a few dollars to some people and nothing at all to others. One cost that never appears in the comparison: sharing a hotspot is among the heaviest things a phone does. A day of tethering a laptop will eat a phone battery that would otherwise have lasted until evening, which is exactly the moment you need maps and a boarding pass.

Desktop machines are hungrier than phones

A pack that comfortably covers a phone for a week can vanish in a morning on a laptop, and the reason is not the browsing — it is everything the machine does while you are not watching. Size the plan for the device, not out of habit.

  • Set updates to manual before you leave. On a metered connection Windows already holds most of them back — tell it the connection is metered, because it does not always work that out on its own.
  • Pause cloud sync rather than trusting it to be sensible. One re-indexed folder is the single most common way a travel pack disappears overnight.
  • Buy one size up for a working laptop. Packs run 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB, each valid 30 days, and the price per gigabyte falls as they get bigger.

For a phone, 3–5 GB is a comfortable week. For a laptop that is genuinely being worked on, 10 GB is the honest starting point. The per-activity numbers are broken down here — and topping up takes a tap, so starting one size below your fear is still the cheaper mistake.

A device with no line in your name

There is a reason a data-only profile fits a tablet or a laptop more naturally than it fits a phone, and it is not a technical one. A phone is already an identity: a number, a contract, a contacts list, a decade of accounts tied to it. A second device does not have to be any of that unless you make it so.

  • No number means nothing to verify against. There is no SMS to intercept, no number to reuse across sign-ups, and nothing that ties the device to the person who bought it.
  • No carrier account means no line in your name. The purchase is a random order code paid in crypto, so the tablet in your bag corresponds to no subscriber record anywhere.
  • It is genuinely separate from your phone. Different profile, different device, no shared line — which is the whole point of carrying a second one rather than a spare phone with your SIM in it.

Keep the claim the right size, as always. This hides who bought the data — it does not hide where the device is, because every network a modem attaches to knows a device is in its country. What an eSIM does and does not reveal draws that line properly, and the threat model covers the layer you add on top.

Used with that understood, it is a clean setup: a working machine that reaches the internet on data nobody sold to a named person, in 190 countries, without a single form. That is a modest and completely real thing, which is the most any honest version of this page can promise.

Questions, answered

Can I put an eSIM in a Wi-Fi-only iPad?

No, and this is the most common disappointment on this whole subject. The cellular version of an iPad is a physically different product with a modem and an eSIM chip inside it; the Wi-Fi version has neither. No software update, no accessory and no adapter adds them afterwards. The instant check is Settings: if there is no “Cellular Data” entry, the hardware is not there, and your route online is your phone’s hotspot instead.

Does a MacBook support eSIM?

No. Apple has never shipped a Mac with a cellular modem of any kind, so there is nothing for a profile to install onto — this applies to every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro ever made, including the latest ones. The practical answer is the iPhone or iPad beside it: install the travel profile there, turn on the personal hotspot, and the Mac uses the same plan at no extra cost. Windows laptops are the ones where the answer depends on the configuration.

How do I install an eSIM on a laptop with no camera?

By typing in the two values the QR code contains rather than scanning it: an SM-DP+ server address and an activation code, both shown as text beside the QR on your order page. In Windows 11 the path is Settings, then Network and internet, then Cellular, then eSIM profiles, then Add profile with the option to enter an activation code manually. Two devices online independently means two profiles. If you would rather not buy a second plan, install the one you have on whichever device travels alone and share it from there over a hotspot — that is the same data reaching both, which is usually the sensible answer for a week away.

Will a travel eSIM work in an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch?

No, and no third-party eSIM will, from any provider. A cellular watch is not asking for data — it is asking to mirror the phone number on your phone, which is a service only your own mobile carrier can provide because it involves that carrier issuing a second profile for the number you already have with them. A data-only plan has no number to mirror, so the watch has nothing to accept. If a store implies otherwise, that is worth treating as a warning about the store.
