How long does an eSIM last?
“How long does an eSIM last?” is three questions wearing one coat, and only one of them has a deadline you can miss. The chip in your phone lasts as long as the phone. The profile lasts until you delete it. The data plan is the only part with a clock — 30 days, counted from its first connection abroad, not from the day you paid. The practical consequence is worth acting on: install before you fly, every time. You get a calm Wi-Fi install with your own tools instead of a scramble at an airport whose free network wants a booking reference — and it costs you exactly zero days.
The reverse mistake is the expensive one. Enabling a pack “to test it” while still at home does nothing at all, but enabling one on arrival for a country you will not reach for another fortnight burns two weeks of a 30-day window on an empty room.
When the gigabytes run out first
This is the common ending, and it is undramatic. There is no overage bill, no surprise charge and no throttled crawl — a prepaid pack has no billing relationship to run over. The data simply stops.

The number that surprises people: a 10 GB pack bought for a five-day trip usually ends with 7 GB thrown away. Five days of maps, messaging and a few uploads is about 3 GB for most travellers. Because there is no way to reclaim days, the fix has to happen before the purchase rather than after it. Match the pack to the length of the trip first and the intensity of use second, and treat the 30 days as the ceiling it is rather than an allowance you are expected to fill.
What an ended plan looks like on the phone
Both endings produce the same symptoms, and those symptoms look exactly like a broken eSIM. This is the most common false alarm in travel data, and it sends people through a troubleshooting checklist that could not possibly help.
- Full bars, no internet. The phone stays registered on the local network; only the data session is refused.
- The line still appears in settings, still named, still switched on. An ended plan does not delete itself.

The rule that makes sequences work is easy to get wrong in a hurry: only one pack should ever be connected at a time. Deleting a finished profile
A finished profile is inert. It moves no data, costs nothing and will not reactivate itself — but it does occupy one of the device’s eSIM slots, and phones hold fewer than people assume. Clearing out old travel profiles is ordinary housekeeping.
- Delete it once both counters are done — no data left and the window closed. There is nothing remaining to lose at that point.
- Do not delete a live one to “free up space”. The profile is single-install, so removing it means a support ticket to have it reissued, not a re-scan of the same QR.
- Keep the order reference until you are home. It is what an anonymous ticket is opened against if anything needs sorting out afterwards.
- Remember that a factory reset takes profiles with it. Wiping a phone abroad wipes the travel line too — the one situation where a live plan disappears without expiring.
Deleting a profile has no effect on the physical SIM beside it. Travel profiles are data-only and sit alongside your everyday line, so removing one changes nothing about your number, your calls, your SMS or the apps tied to them.
What an ended plan does not change
It is worth closing on the part with no clock at all. A plan ending is a commercial event: the allowance is spent, the window is closed, the profile stops moving data. None of that is a privacy event, in either direction.
- Nothing new is created when a plan ends. There is no final bill to issue, no account to reconcile and no identity to attach one to — the pack simply stops.
- Nothing already gone comes back. The connection records the local carrier made while you were using it are theirs, and they outlive the plan. An expired profile does not retract them.
- The purchase stays as anonymous as it was. A pack bought without a name does not acquire one by expiring, and buying a second does not tie it to the first any more tightly than a shared balance already does.
