What IP address does your eSIM give you?

Land in Bangkok, open your banking app, and it either greets you in the wrong language or refuses to open at all. Nothing is broken. A travel eSIM hands you an address belonging to the network that issued it, not to the ground under your feet — and every site you touch reads that address as your location. Here is what decides the number, what it quietly breaks, what it genuinely hides, and the ten minutes before departure that spare you the argument.

The short answer

Your eSIM gives you a public IP address belonging to the operator that issued the profile, and it usually geolocates to that operator’s country rather than to the one you are standing in. That is a consequence of how international roaming carries traffic. It is not a fault, and it is not a feature anybody sold you.

  • Where you appear is where your traffic exits. The visited network hands your data back to the issuing operator, and the internet meets you at that gateway. The tower you are attached to never gets a say in it.
  • The address is shared, and it is temporary. Mobile networks put thousands of subscribers behind one public address and reassign them constantly. It identifies a network and a rough region — not a person, and not a phone.
  • Everything that annoys you follows from those two facts. The bank that wants a second factor, the catalogue in the wrong language, the captcha that will not end: each one is a service reading the address and drawing a reasonable conclusion about somebody else.

It runs the other way too, which is the part worth keeping. A network in the country you are visiting cannot match your traffic to a local address, a local account or a local bill, because none of those exist. Where a travel eSIM puts you on the map

Two arrangements exist, and which one sits behind your profile decides this entire guide. Neither is printed on a product page anywhere, because operators change them without asking resellers or customers.

Home-routed roaming

The standard arrangement, and the one behind most travel eSIMs. The local network accepts your profile, then tunnels every packet back to the operator that issued it. You reach the internet at that operator’s gateway, wearing that operator’s address, in that operator’s country.

Local breakout

Do this at home, on the sofa, before any of it matters. It is four steps and it removes most of the guesswork from the rest of the trip.

Banking apps: the one that actually matters

What the address says about you, and what it does not

This is a privacy site, so here is the honest accounting on the one identifier a data-only, no-KYC profile cannot make disappear.

  • It is not attached to a name. A profile bought with no account, no card and no identity document leaves nothing on our side for an address to be joined to. There is no subscriber record to look up, because one was never created.
  • It is shared by construction. Carrier-grade address translation puts a large population behind each public address, which makes “this address did that” a far weaker statement than it sounds in a headline.
  • It is not your home address. It does not belong to your home line, your home broadband or your home account, so it does not stitch this trip onto the rest of your internet life.

What none of this fixes

The honest list, because a guide that only describes the good parts is not worth the time it takes to read.

  • A service that geofences by country carries on geofencing. If a portal only runs at home, no eSIM and no address changes that. Only being at home does.
