Dual SIM

Keep your number & WhatsApp abroad

The #1 traveler fear, answered: your number stays yours. A data eSIM runs alongside your SIM — WhatsApp, OTPs and calls carry on like nothing happened.

How dual-SIM actually works

Modern phones run two lines at once. The trick is splitting the roles:

  • Your physical SIM = identity. It keeps your number registered for calls, SMS and OTPs.
  • The eSIM = pipe. All internet flows through cheap local data.
  • Apps don’t care which pipe they use — they follow the data line automatically.
02

Why WhatsApp doesn’t even notice

  • WhatsApp is tied to your registration, not to whichever SIM is providing internet.
  • It already works on Wi-Fi with no SIM at all — eSIM data is the same situation.
  • Same for Signal, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime: nothing to re-verify, nobody sees a new number.

Don’t tap “change number” in WhatsApp — there is no new number. Install the eSIM and change nothing.

What happens to calls & SMS

EventWhat happens
Incoming SMS / bank OTPArrives on your number as usual — receiving texts abroad is free on almost every carrier
Incoming callRings normally — answering may cost your carrier’s roaming voice rate, so screen unknown numbers
Outgoing “calls”Use WhatsApp/Signal over the eSIM data — free and better quality than roaming voice
VoicemailWorks as at home; retrieving it may bill like a roaming call

The exact 5-switch setup

  1. 01
    Label both lines

“Home” and “Travel data” — 30 seconds that prevent every mistake below.

  2. 02
    Mobile data → eSIM

The single switch that saves the money.

  3. 03
Data roaming ON — eSIM only

Travel profiles need it; it costs nothing extra.

  4. 04
Data roaming OFF — home SIM

Blocks surprise charges while keeping calls/SMS alive.

  5. 05
    Default voice line → Home

So dialing out uses your real number when you mean it.

Questions, answered

Will contacts see a different number when I message them?

No. WhatsApp/iMessage identity is your registered number, which never changes. Only actual cellular calls you place use whichever voice line you select.

Will my banking app and OTPs work?

Yes — OTP texts arrive on your home SIM (receiving SMS abroad is free on nearly all carriers), and the banking app itself runs over the eSIM’s data like any other app.

What if my phone is single-SIM-at-a-time?

Phones with eSIM support run eSIM + physical simultaneously in practice. If you ever disable your home line manually, WhatsApp still works — just re-enable the line when you need an OTP.
